Weekend adventure and more things on Tahiti

Outside the hotel environment, lucky I have parents who know how to grow vegetables. This post is about the variety of vegetables that can grown on Tahiti, somewhere high up on a montain plateau. There's a hidden gem, with lots of fruit and vegetables, grown in a sustainable way, letting the ground rest after growing a variety of vegetables on it. If you see grass, it is being left to rest and the local grass is allowed to grow before it gets turned around. I used to see dad when I was only a kid doing that when we grew a lot of crops on one end and then, maybe after 3 or 4 different things growing on it, we would let it rest and the grass grow for month or so. Everything that likes tropical climate such as tomates, bell peppers (all colours), leeks, spring onions, daikon, cabbage, brocoli, papaya, and yes pineapple. Guess which one tastes the best under the tropics/equator.

tahitian versus fijian pineapple variety

Yes, the pineapple variety with the "prickles" is called the "Queen Tahiti Pineapple" and is much sweeter than its counterpart. In supermarkets, its the black or dark green juice box with some pulp. Not the clear watered in the white brick, its probably the well known "Dole" variety grown all around the Pacific Islands and exported to New Zealand, watered down version and less pineapple taste.

And yes, the pineapple fruit comes from this small shrub.

Lots of other things grow as well on my dad's hobby cottage piece of paradise.

It is a relaxing and peaceful spot that my dad puts a lot of effort to maintain.

Since they both retired, they are enjoying the fruit of their labour a lot more and growing vegetables makes them very happy.

Honestly the variety of crops is so wide and you could use all the plants he grows for your weekly salads and other meal prep needs.

The view is also great and the height from the ground level and oceanic breeze makes it very pleasant to visit on a hot and humid day on the island.
